It took me ten visits to Japan before seeing full-on Cherry blossom season. Hanami is indeed as pretty as everyone makes it sound, but the visitor crush is just as real - this is the busiest I've ever seen many places! I would definitely avoid this time of the year for normal visits.

Amusingly enough, while the most famous cherry blossoms spots are absolutely thronging with people, it only takes ten to twenty minutes on a local train to get to basically identical spots with barely anyone, including locals - especially during normal working hours.
